At this year’s Ice Zoo Hockey Club Awards, I had the chance to reflect on the lessons hockey has taught me, both as a player and a coach. Hockey isn’t just a game—it’s a classroom for life, offering young players valuable skills they’ll carry with them long after they leave the rink. As I looked out at the players, coaches, and families gathered to celebrate another season, I shared a few key lessons that have shaped my journey and continue to inspire me.
Here are the takeaways I offered, each rooted in hockey but with meaning far beyond the ice:
- Edges Matter
Hockey requires players to stay balanced on their edges. In life, our “inside edge”—our confidence, resilience, and skills—keeps us moving forward, even when things get tough. - Hunger Fuels Success
Just as players push themselves for second efforts on the ice, it’s that hunger that drives us to pursue our goals. Relentless drive can make all the difference between dreams and achievements. - Hustle is Essential
In hockey, you have to go after the puck; you can’t wait for it to come to you. Life is no different—waiting for opportunities isn’t enough; you need to pursue what you want. - Small Efforts Add Up
The minor plays and quick passes can change the game. Similarly, in life, small acts of kindness and daily efforts build momentum towards bigger results. - Passing Builds Bonds
Hockey is a team sport, and passing connects players. In life, lifting others up and working together accomplishes more than going it alone. - Take Your Shot
Wayne Gretzky’s famous line, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,” is a reminder to seize opportunities and face fear head-on. - Teamwork Leads to Success
On the ice, teamwork, trust, and collaboration are the foundation of success. The same goes for life—we achieve more when we work together. - Character Builds Resilience
Hockey builds character by teaching players to push through tough moments. Similarly, life builds character through resilience and perseverance. - Training is Essential
Success in hockey requires consistent training and dedication. In any endeavour, continuous learning and skill development are keys to growth. - Positive Self-Talk
Hockey players encourage themselves on the ice, and life demands the same. Our inner dialogue can either empower us or hold us back.
It was a privilege to share these reflections with our young players, hoping they take these insights forward, both in and beyond their sport. Whether your arena is hockey or another pursuit, these values remind us of the importance of resilience, teamwork, and a commitment to growth.
