As we approach the end of the year, there’s no better time to reflect on the skills we’d like to develop and the goals we set for the year ahead. We recently wrapped up another inspiring cohort of the Proficient Speaker Course with Arup, marking a rewarding journey in helping professionals elevate their presentation skills. This year, I had the privilege of partnering with Arup, guiding several groups of their talented team members through the process of mastering the art of speaking with confidence and clarity.
In our latest session, Samantha Samuels, Senior Learning and Development Consultant at Arup, shared some reflections that struck a chord. Samantha highlighted how the course offered a crucial confidence boost, especially for those stepping back into in-person presentations after a long time. Watching each team member stand before their peers, practising their message and owning their space, was a proud moment for everyone involved.
Reflecting on my own early experiences with public speaking, I remember the learning curve all too well. There were times when I would nervously pace without purpose, or when a well-intended joke fell flat. One of my most memorable moments came at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne, speaking in the expansive Savoy Ballroom with its soaring 25-foot ceilings. The size of the room and the grand stage made for an exciting yet nerve-wracking experience, and I found myself battling nerves as I started my keynote. These moments, though challenging, eventually became stories I could laugh about—and they underscored the importance of guidance and practise.
Public speaking is a journey, and it’s not about striving for perfection. It’s about finding your voice, connecting with your audience, and embracing each experience along the way. Mishaps and nerves are all part of the process, and over time, they transform into valuable lessons.
So, as we look towards a new year, consider taking that first step into public speaking or advancing your current skills. Each presentation is an opportunity to learn, to grow, and to make an impact. Here’s to embracing the journey with confidence, resilience, and a sense of humour—and to making public speaking a skill to master in the coming year.
