I didn’t expect to write a leadership post today.

But when I heard about the passing of Hulk Hogan, it stopped me. Like a lot of kids who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, I spent Saturday mornings glued to the TV, watching this larger-than-life figure take over the wrestling ring. It was wild. It was theatrical. And it was unforgettable.

At the time, I didn’t think much of it beyond the fun. But as I reflected on Hogan’s life and legacy, I realised something: some of what he embodied back then still shows up in the work I do today.

It made me ask: Could there actually be leadership lessons hidden in all that hype?

Presence and Connection

Say what you will about wrestling—but Hogan had presence. He knew how to light up a room (or a stadium), connect with people, and deliver a message that stuck. That wasn’t just performance—it was influence.

As someone who now trains and coaches leaders, I see how important that is. Presence matters. Whether you’re leading a team meeting or giving tough feedback, people don’t just respond to what you say—they respond to how you show up.

Hogan showed up fully. And people leaned in.

Charisma Is More Than a Gimmick

Of course, it was all a bit much—the outfits, the slogans, the flexing. But charisma has a purpose. It draws people in. And when it’s used with intention—not manipulation—it becomes a tool for connection.

Leaders who know how to bring energy into a room, to make others feel seen and engaged, are often the ones who inspire action. It’s not about being loud. It’s about being real—and letting that realness resonate.

Resilience, Reinvention, and Flaws

Hogan’s story wasn’t perfect. There were controversies and tough seasons. But what struck me was that he kept showing up. He adapted. He tried to grow.

Resilience doesn’t always look clean. Sometimes it’s messy. Sometimes you fall out of favour and have to start again. But the willingness to reflect, re-engage, and lead again—that’s what matters.

I see that same trait in great leaders: they’re not perfect, but they’re present. And they keep doing the work.

I know this might feel like a stretch. But we don’t always find leadership lessons in textbooks or boardrooms. Sometimes, we find them in the stories that shaped us—even the ones from childhood.

So here’s to Hogan. For the presence. For the grit. And for reminding me that even a wrestler in yellow tights can leave a legacy worth learning from.

Thanks for the ride, brother. 👊
