The attendees weren’t just listening to a story.

They were on the bus.

They could smell it. They could feel it. They could sense the emotion of the moment.

That is the power of a well-told story. It doesn’t simply pass information from one person to another. It invites people into an experience. It helps them see what you saw, feel what you felt, and understand why the message matters.

At Microsoft Elevate Day in Sydney, I had the honour of representing TransforMe Learning and leading a workshop on High Impact Storytelling to Inspire Action and Trust. The session brought together 60 participants who were willing to jump in, get their feet wet, and explore how storytelling can shape the way leaders communicate, connect and inspire.

I opened the session with a personal story involving my father and me when I was 13 years old. It wasn’t just a story for the sake of filling time. It was intentional. It was chosen because the right story can do something that data alone often cannot. It can open people up. It can create emotional connection. It can build trust before the main message is even delivered.

After the session, one CEO of a nonprofit shared that he could feel the emotion of the opening story. He said he resonated deeply with the key message of helping those who may have been overlooked. That message connected with him personally because he leads a nonprofit working with kids who are sick.

That moment reminded me why storytelling matters so much.

A story can reach people in places that a slide deck never will. It can take a message from being understood intellectually to being felt personally. It can help leaders communicate purpose, values and direction in a way that people actually remember.

And in a world increasingly shaped by data, technology and AI, the human side of communication is becoming even more important.

We have more information available to us than ever before. We can analyse, automate and generate at a pace that would have been hard to imagine not long ago. But even with all of this progress, people still want to feel seen. They still want to understand the heart behind the message. They still want to know why something matters.

That is where storytelling has such a powerful role to play.

Stories help leaders inspire action because they create meaning. They help build trust because they reveal humanity. They help ideas stick because they connect the message to emotion, memory and lived experience.

The workshop was a wonderful experience, not simply because of the content, but because of the way the participants leaned in. They were willing to reflect, engage and explore how their own stories could be used to communicate with greater clarity and impact.

Microsoft Elevate Day itself was such a well-run event, held at the incredible Doltone House at Jones Bay Wharf. A big shout-out to Katelynn and Christina for championing such a meaningful day, rich with speakers, panels, connection and purpose.

I left grateful to have been part of it — and reminded again that while technology continues to change the way we work, story continues to shape the way we connect.
